Day 15 - Back to Work in Chilamate!

As our time in Chilamate winds down, we jumped back into our projects with energy and enthusiasm. Only two days left, and we’re determined to make the most of every moment.

At the elementary school, our group led fun, interactive games to help the kids practice their English classics, like Simon Says, which had everyone smiling. We also wrapped up several painting projects we’ve been working on over the past week, leaving the school a little brighter than before.

The team at the organic farm made major progress today, finishing construction on four sturdy benches. Tomorrow, they’ll add the final touches with a fresh coat of paint just in time for our departure.

Meanwhile, the women’s co-op group switched locations and got to work painting picnic tables. After a productive morning, they had the chance to cool off with a refreshing swim in a beautiful nearby waterfall, a perfect blend of work and play.

As the sun set, we laced up our boots for a magical rainforest walk. The jungle truly comes alive at night! We spotted poison dart frogs, tree frogs, and all kinds of fascinating wildlife that only emerge after dark.

Tomorrow marks our final full day in Chilamate. We're planning a big celebration with our homestay families, an evening sure to be filled with joy, laughter, and maybe even a few tears. We’re also hosting a talent show during the festivities, where students and families will share music, dance, and surprises. It’s shaping up to be an unforgettable send-off.

  We’re all set and excited for the first part of our journey to Costa Rica! Pre-flight snacks and activities... Dallas, here we come! Spending time at Dallas airport for the long haul was quite an adventure! Our activities included indulging in plenty of naps, enjoying delicious snacks, diving into great reads, and taking refreshing laps around the airport. Wings up on our way to San José, Costa Rica! Our final leg featured a 2.5-hour bus ride through the jungle, during which we saw waterfalls, mountain ranges, coffee farms, and volcanoes. Our view after getting off the bus at our final destination, Chilamaté Rainforest Eco Retreat. We checked into our rooms and enjoyed a buffet-style dinner featuring Costa Rican cuisine. Day 3 - Rainforest Walk and Adventure "Race"

  Here we are starting the day with a healthy, hearty breakfast full of fruits and one of Costa Rica's signature dishes, Gallo Pinto.  Rainforest Ladybug Rainforest Bullet Ant  After breakfast, we went on an educational walk through the rainforest with three expert guides, who showed us all the native animals. Here's Santi taking a nap after our walk.  We had to run with our groups taped together. It's all about teamwork!  The road where our homestays are located is so beautiful! The winning group of the Adventure "Race."  The Adventure "Race" begins! It’s not really a race but more about who can work best as a team in each activity. Four teams of four are participating in a series of fun activities, including salsa dancing, milking a cow, making tortillas, and collaborating on the river.     We finished the race and had an awesome time on the river! Day 4 - Farm and School

  After a hearty breakfast, we split into two groups: one group went to an organic farm while the other went to a local school. This is Cindy O, who is planting a tree at the organic farm. This is the farmer, Daniel. He once worked on pineapple and banana plantations, which have resulted in health issues that persist to this day. He started the organic farm after realizing that using chemicals and pesticides on the plantations was wrong. He has been an organic farmer for 20 years, and his main crops are peppercorn and vanilla.  In this photo, Brendon is playing with the schoolchildren. They all teamed up on him to tilt the seesaw.
