Day 16 - A Bittersweet Farewell to Chilamate

Our final day in Chilamate was one to remember, filled with hard work, heartfelt goodbyes, and plenty of celebration.

At each of our project sites, we wrapped up with a deep sense of pride. The school group completed a vibrant mural featuring soccer balls bouncing across the back wall of the school, a playful and energetic design that reflects the spirit of the students. They worked incredibly hard on it, and the final result is something the entire school community can be proud of. The principal was deeply thankful, noting how the mural brings life to the campus and gives students a renewed sense of pride in their school.

The women’s cooperative group finished strong as well. It was an inspiring experience to collaborate with the local women on their individual projects, from crafting to entrepreneurship. The exchange of stories, skills, and laughter made for an unforgettable connection.

Over at the farm, the team put the finishing touches on the benches they painted earlier in the week, then added detailed artwork featuring a toucan, poison dart frog, and gecko. The farm owner was deeply moved by the effort and creativity, work that will leave a lasting impact on his family and the broader community.

With our service projects complete, we turned our attention to celebration. That evening, we gathered with our homestay families for a festive dinner, followed by a lively talent show and lots of dancing. It was the perfect send-off, joyful, emotional, and filled with love.

Tomorrow, we hit the road early and head for the Caribbean coast. New adventures await, but we’ll carry the spirit of Chilamate with us every step of the way.
