Day 13 - We Came, We Climbed, We Conquered!

We're soaking up every moment of this incredible adventure, and today was no exception! 

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast at our hotel in La Fortuna, we set out for an adventure at Reserva Catarata de La Fortuna, and it did not disappoint!

Our journey began with a scenic hike through the lush rainforest, down 530 steps surrounded by breathtaking views and even a few sloth sightings! At the bottom, we were rewarded with the stunning sight of the waterfall, it truly felt like something out of Jurassic Park. Some of us even braved the cool water for a swim at the base. Then came the climb back up another 530 steps that doubled as our workout for the day!

After drying off and catching our breath, we headed into town for lunch. We all enjoyed a Costa Rican take on classic American favorites, delicious and comforting.

We had heard that Arenal Volcano is usually hidden behind clouds this time of year, so we didn’t expect to see it. But just as we were about to board the bus back to Chilamate, the clouds parted for just one magical minute, long enough to snap the perfect photo.

Back at our homestays, we were greeted with big smiles and excitement from our host families, especially the little brothers and sisters, who couldn’t wait to see us. Sunday is a well-earned rest day, and we’re looking forward to spending it relaxing with our homestay families and hanging out with friends.

Day 1 & 2 - Air Travel and Arrival

  We’re all set and excited for the first part of our journey to Costa Rica! Pre-flight snacks and activities... Dallas, here we come! Spending time at Dallas airport for the long haul was quite an adventure! Our activities included indulging in plenty of naps, enjoying delicious snacks, diving into great reads, and taking refreshing laps around the airport. Wings up on our way to San José, Costa Rica! Our final leg featured a 2.5-hour bus ride through the jungle, during which we saw waterfalls, mountain ranges, coffee farms, and volcanoes. Our view after getting off the bus at our final destination, Chilamaté Rainforest Eco Retreat. We checked into our rooms and enjoyed a buffet-style dinner featuring Costa Rican cuisine. We are headed for an early night to rest up for an exciting day of adventure tomorrow! Buenas Noches!

Day 3 - Rainforest Walk and Adventure "Race"

  Here we are starting the day with a healthy, hearty breakfast full of fruits and one of Costa Rica's signature dishes, Gallo Pinto.  Rainforest Ladybug Rainforest Bullet Ant  After breakfast, we went on an educational walk through the rainforest with three expert guides, who showed us all the native animals. Here's Santi taking a nap after our walk.  We had to run with our groups taped together. It's all about teamwork!  The road where our homestays are located is so beautiful! The winning group of the Adventure "Race."  The Adventure "Race" begins! It’s not really a race but more about who can work best as a team in each activity. Four teams of four are participating in a series of fun activities, including salsa dancing, milking a cow, making tortillas, and collaborating on the river.     We finished the race and had an awesome time on the river! Day 4 - Farm and School

  After a hearty breakfast, we split into two groups: one group went to an organic farm while the other went to a local school. This is Cindy O, who is planting a tree at the organic farm. This is the farmer, Daniel. He once worked on pineapple and banana plantations, which have resulted in health issues that persist to this day. He started the organic farm after realizing that using chemicals and pesticides on the plantations was wrong. He has been an organic farmer for 20 years, and his main crops are peppercorn and vanilla.  In this photo, Brendon is playing with the schoolchildren. They all teamed up on him to tilt the seesaw.
