Day 11 - Where Creativity Meets Community

Hello everyone! We’re really starting to see the results of our hard work, and it’s been amazing to watch our projects come to life.

The elementary school is coming along beautifully, and our group’s creativity is truly shining. One especially fun update: the back wall of the school building, facing the soccer field, is being transformed into a cheerful, soccer-themed mural for the kids to enjoy. It’s already bringing smiles to everyone who sees it! We’ve also been spending time playing with the students, and even introduced them to the game of Four Square! It was such a hit. The kids picked it up quickly and had a blast learning a new game they can play during recess.

Today, the women’s co-op moved to a new location where they’re helping plant a tomato garden. The garden will supply fresh, organic produce used in cooking classes offered to both tourists and locals. It’s such a cool way to combine sustainability, education, and community building.

Meanwhile, at the organic farm, the group finished building the first of eight benches, and it turned out great! These benches will provide a shady resting spot for visiting groups and a peaceful perch for birdwatchers to take in the incredible Costa Rican wildlife.

After a productive morning, we treated ourselves to a little outing in town: ice cream, some shopping, coffee, and of course, a snack restock at the grocery store!

Tomorrow, we’re off bright and early for a drive to La Fortuna, about 40 miles west of Chilamate. There, we’ll experience an indigenous rainforest walk, followed by a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs. And the best part? Our hotel has air conditioning, yes!

On Sunday, we’ll cool off with a dip in a stunning waterfall before heading back to Chilamate to reunite with our homestay families.

Day 1 & 2 - Air Travel and Arrival

  We’re all set and excited for the first part of our journey to Costa Rica! Pre-flight snacks and activities... Dallas, here we come! Spending time at Dallas airport for the long haul was quite an adventure! Our activities included indulging in plenty of naps, enjoying delicious snacks, diving into great reads, and taking refreshing laps around the airport. Wings up on our way to San José, Costa Rica! Our final leg featured a 2.5-hour bus ride through the jungle, during which we saw waterfalls, mountain ranges, coffee farms, and volcanoes. Our view after getting off the bus at our final destination, Chilamaté Rainforest Eco Retreat. We checked into our rooms and enjoyed a buffet-style dinner featuring Costa Rican cuisine. We are headed for an early night to rest up for an exciting day of adventure tomorrow! Buenas Noches!

Day 3 - Rainforest Walk and Adventure "Race"

  Here we are starting the day with a healthy, hearty breakfast full of fruits and one of Costa Rica's signature dishes, Gallo Pinto.  Rainforest Ladybug Rainforest Bullet Ant  After breakfast, we went on an educational walk through the rainforest with three expert guides, who showed us all the native animals. Here's Santi taking a nap after our walk.  We had to run with our groups taped together. It's all about teamwork!  The road where our homestays are located is so beautiful! The winning group of the Adventure "Race."  The Adventure "Race" begins! It’s not really a race but more about who can work best as a team in each activity. Four teams of four are participating in a series of fun activities, including salsa dancing, milking a cow, making tortillas, and collaborating on the river.     We finished the race and had an awesome time on the river! Day 4 - Farm and School

  After a hearty breakfast, we split into two groups: one group went to an organic farm while the other went to a local school. This is Cindy O, who is planting a tree at the organic farm. This is the farmer, Daniel. He once worked on pineapple and banana plantations, which have resulted in health issues that persist to this day. He started the organic farm after realizing that using chemicals and pesticides on the plantations was wrong. He has been an organic farmer for 20 years, and his main crops are peppercorn and vanilla.  In this photo, Brendon is playing with the schoolchildren. They all teamed up on him to tilt the seesaw.
